CESEL, a Center for Social and Emotional Learning
CESEL is comprised of a Danish network of educators, scientists, policy makers, and concerned citizens to increase people’s awareness regarding the need for, and the positive effects of, systematic educational efforts to promote the social and emotional learning of children and young people.
CESEL is a non-profit organisation, built over a set of association rules. The association was formed in April 1999.
Aims CESEL has set itself the goal to collect, adapt, develop and be instrumental in bringing out knowledge about social competences af children and young ones (4-18 years old)
Target groups CESEL´s target groups are all adults in Denmark who are in daily contact with children, primary pedagogues, teachers and parents. Our work is focused towards individuals, institutions, schools and homes.
Start-up After having experienced a rising demand for relevant methods and materials in Denmark for development of social competences of children, this was searched for internationally. Second Step was found and estimated as a qualified program. After a visit from Committee for Children to Copenhagen to a Danish conference concerning the theme, CESEL was given the option to publish the program in Danish and later the license to the Danish edition:
Trin for Trin (In English this means step by step)

Trin for Trin is the first material of its kind in Denmark, and CESEL has been in charge of developing, editing and adapting it for Danish relations.
CESEL has applied for economic assistance for the publishing at three Danish Ministries: The Ministry of Education, The Ministry of Social Affairs , and the Ministry of Justice. The sale´s profit of this material is transferred to CESEL, who on this basis develops and offers new programmes.
Co-operation with a publishing firm CESEL is co-operating with a publisher called Special-pædagogisk Forlag (Special Education Publisher).
CESEL and Special-pædagogisk Forlag have agreed to co-operate about production, selling and marketing the program. Special-pædagogisk Forlag will print the curricula and fulfill orders from schools (ship, invoice and collect revenues). Please read further more on the homepage: www.spf-herning.dk
The first two parts of Trin for Trin were published Jan. 2000, part 3 in August 2000. A Trainers manual 1-3 was published in Jan. 2001. In August 2003 part 4 "Check it out!" was published followed by "A Trainer´s Manual 4" in September 2004. Besides the "Book about Trin for Trin" as well as "Trin for Trin and Parent´s Cooperation" was published in 2002.
Tasks CESEL develops materials of information and programs of education, arranges meetings and courses, render counselling and guidance as well as other contributions, with the purpose to support the development of children´s social competences. Further on the center arranges contact to lokal instructors by request concerning meetings of information and full-time courses.
The Spreading of Trin for Trin
Trin for Trin has been very popular in Denmark, because it is methodically and logically constucted and workable.
In 2003 Trin for Trin was published in a Swedish edition named "StegVis"
The Danish translation of Second Step is being tested in Greenland (Tulleriit) and has formed the basis of both the Swedish (StegVis) and the Icelandic version (Stig af Stig) of the material.
International co-operation about Second Step
Second Step is widespread in USA, Canada, Japan, Germany, UK and Norway. The programme is being tested in Finland, Lithuania, and Slovakia.
CESEL takes part in a yearly, international meeting, where the countries mentioned exchange ideas, knowledge and experience of Second Step.
